define: Accidense

TDavid: Something odd I’ve noticed about Google Adsense ads [cut] is that some ads have a significant amount of clickable white space. Some ads have more white space than text. I think this can, and does, lead to accidental user clicking. How much accidense, I don’t know.

http://www.makeyougohmm.com/20051127/2674/

eMiniMalls Bounces Back

Last week, Chitika announced a change to the eMiniMalls layout that reduced clicks substantially. My own CTR dropped by more than half and my CPM had an equivalent drop. A week later, my CTR hasn't recovered, but my CPM has. And that's all that really matters. Chitika has boosted CPCs to compensate for the drop in CTR. The boost may have been built into the eMiniMalls algorithm.

eMiniMalls v. Adsense - Which is Better?

The Connected Internet blog asks "Chitika eMiniMalls Vs Adsense - Which One is Better?" Their own experience leads them to say "My Chitika ads are outperforming my Google AdSense ads by around 50%, even though in my view the AdSense ads are in better positions on my blog."

On KBCafe, I give eMiniMalls about the same placement as AdSense. Last month, my first with eMiniMalls, the split in revenues was basically 2/3 AdSense and 1/3 Chitika. Unfortunately, of late, that number is 4/5 Adsense and some days as high as 19/20 Adsense. This doesn't mean I'll be removing the Chitika ads as they are a complimentary source of income. I'm sure some Webpages will do much better with eMiniMalls, particularly gadget related blogs. Maybe I should start one and find out?

Eh List gets AJAXified

Chris Nolan: I've made a bunch of minor updates to the Eh List tonight. I decided that the main display page was getting a bit crowded and have thought for a while to do something about it. To experiment I've decided to limit the view of the google history to 10 entries by default, and also to hide the details to begin with. You now have to click on the little expand arrow under the graphs to have it pop out.

http://ehlist.ca/

Randy: I've been using ehlist all month. A must have for anybody who is serious about SEO. It's great and it's getting better.

The Intermission, by AdBrite

Philip J. Kaplan: What's an Intermission? A full-page display. The name of the publisher’s site, and a prominent link that allows visitors to easily close the ad, are displayed at the top of the screen. Advertiser bidding starts at $10 CPM (1-cent per unique user), and will grow quickly on quality sites.

http://www.adbrite.com/mb/blog.php#post50

Randy: I'm not certain this is such a great idea. For publishers, you don't have to worry, you always have the last word. When an advertiser submits an intermission, you can always reject it. Personally, unless someone bid extremely high, I simply wouldn't accept them and I might also remove them from some higher quality pages.

Click here to signup as an AdBrite publisher.

}
</script>

You can then setup an AdSense click as a "goal" within the Analytics interface.

Update: This works extremely well.

Use Google Maps to target your customers

About: When you choose customized targeting for an AdWords campaign, your ads appear only to customers searching for results within a specified distance from your business. The area where your ads appear will be typically be a circle around your business location.

Randy: Wow! This is likely the best geotargeted advertising solution I've ever seen on the Web. Adwords and Google just keep getting better.

About: We're testing a new product that gives you a free and fast way to speak directly to the advertiser you found on a Google search results page – over the phone. Here's how it works: When you click the phone icon, you can enter your phone number. Once you click 'Connect For Free,' Google calls the number you provided. When you pick up, you hear ringing on the other end as Google connects you to the other party. Then, chat away on our dime.

eMiniMalls Curiosity Clicks

Chitika: We are not filtering or rejecting any curiosity clicks. To help minimize (please note, not filter or reject) potential curiosity clicks we recently updated the eMiniMalls units by removing the link from the product title in the eMiniMalls interface. Why? Because initial data on the resulting sales conversions suggested that clicks on product titles and product images are leading to very low sales conversions when compared to the clicks on the merchant listings.

Randy: From what I can tell (very early data), curiosity clicks represented more than 50% of my clicks. Removing this link reduced my earnings accordingly. I can only assume that all other publishers are experiencing a similar drop in CPM. Still sounds like a cash grab on Chitika's part. If these clicks were not converting well, then Chitika is maintaining almost the same earnings and paying out less than half to publishers that they use to. Ingenious business play, maintain sales while cutting direct costs in more than half. It just means a lot of pissed off publishers.

Amazon Product Previews

Amazon has a new program called Amazon Product Previews where the Amazon links contain contextual production information that is displayed when the user hovers a basic Amazon link.

Amazon: When users hover over a preview-enhanced link, a small window appears containing valuable content and information about the product you're advertising, including an image, new and used price, average customer review and availability.

http://associates.amazon.com/gp/associates/network/product-previews/main.html/104-4751379-0815956

Randy: I tried this on KBCafe shopping search. I was not able to produce the enhanced link. I tried it from several computers. I did notice they were rewriting the URLs, but I was not able to activate the previews.

Amazon: 50% of the visitors to Web sites in the beta program will always see preview-enhanced Basic Display Product Links. The other 50% will always see standard links.

Randy: I assume they are trying to compete with Chitika eMinimalls. Amazon Associates have always paid very little per click compared to other programs like AdSense and eMinimalls.

Update: It finally activated on my umpteenth try (in Firefox, not in IE yet). I can't figure out when it activates or not. It's very random and very rare.

eMiniMalls CPMs Fall

Chitika: To help filter out so-called “curiosity clicks” that typically do not lead to conversions on the merchants’ side, we updated the eMiniMalls units to drive qualified clicks. Hence, eMiniMalls users will notice a dip in the overall click through rate (and hence the overall revenue).

http://chitika.com/blog/?p=23

Randy: My CPMs have dropped about 60%. I suspect Chitika is doing a cash grab. A permanent Karma loss. I'll be replacing many of my Chitika ads with other alternates in the next few weeks.

eMiniMalls - How to Increase CTR

Darren Rowse: The following are some of the suggestions I would make to the publishers I saw today that might be helpful to other Chitika publishers also.

Poorly positioned Ads

Using default keywords

Other Irrelevant Ads

Poorly designed ads

Not using Channel Tracking

Stale Ads

Randy: A lot of great advice for eMiniMall publishers from the king of eMiniMalls.

David Naylor: Remember the new sitestats section of Google Sitemaps? In a couple of minutes we’ve found quite a dodgy exploit which sometimes allows you to see the stats of your less web-savvy competitors. [cut] 23% of the Alex Top 100 sites are susceptible to this problem.

http://www.davidnaylor.co.uk/archives/2005/11/18/google-sitemaps/

Danny Sullivan: Turns out the Google Sitemaps stats security problem means anyone can access the top terms driving traffic to the US White House web site. [cut] Specifically, here are the "Top Search Query Clicks" for the site, as reported by the Google sitemaps system:

failure

http://blog.searchenginewatch.com/blog/051118-105212

Randy: The flaw has reportedly been patched.

100k Page in Yahoo!'s Index

I just noticed that I stormed thru 100k Webpages in the Yahoo! index. It looks like they found 50k Webpages overnight. I'm also seeing 100k inbound links. That's hard to believe. A little investigation reveals that Yahoo! isn't respect NOFOLLOW. Yikes!

SEOing Technorati

I noticed that none of my blogs were showing up in Technorati's Blog Finder. I use to have some amazing placements and a lot of referral hits. After investigating, I realized that Technorati was automatically picking up zero or one tag per blog, rather than 10+ as it previous had. I then noticed that you can assign your own tags to your claimed blogs and did so. Now all my blogs are showing high on the Technorati SERPs again.

Google Analytics is Awesome

It took a few days, but my stats for Google Analytics finally started to trickle in today. This is by far the best Web analytics software I've ever used. It says I had two visitors from Timmons, ON. I know my aunt was one of them and one of her friends was likely the other. I even had one visitor from Kabul, Kabol, Afghanistan. Not only does it track by city, but also by language; one Romanian visitor. 64% of my referrers come from Google. 21% from Yahoo! You can save everything as Tab Separated, Excel and there's lots of pretty graphs for the boss. Please Google, plug that Matrix data pipe into the back of my brain.

Google Base is Live!

Google Blog: Today we're excited to announce Google Base [cut]. Google Base enables content owners to easily make their information searchable online. Anyone, from large companies to website owners and individuals, can use it to submit their content in the form of data items. We'll host the items and make them searchable for free.

http://base.google.com/base/default

Randy: Coolz0r sent his portfolio in Google Base. Pretty cool! This seems like a SPAMmers dream come true. I posted this blog entry in Google Base as an article. This is a major threat to eBay and Craigslist. Google Base allows you to post Course Schedules, Events and Activities, Jobs, News and Articles, People Profiles, Products, Recipes, Reference Articles, Reviews, Services, Vehicles, Wanted Ads and custom objects. You can also bulk upload via RSS or Atom. I suspect many large content shops will be bulk uploading in the near future.

Since day 10, I’ve been sent referral hits from Google. And this site even appears in top results for a few queries.

Google Analytics

About: Google Analytics shows you how people found your site, how they explored it, and how you can enhance the visitor experience.

http://www.google.com/analytics/

Randy: Free for AdWords users and low-traffic sites, Google Analytics analyzes your Web traffic. The site is extremely slow at the moment.

Update: After more than a day, Analytics is still reporting zero hits and visitors to my site. I double checked the javascript and it looks fine.

Marquis vs. Adsense

Robert Scoble: Remember last year when the blogosphere was up in arms about Marquis? Oh, if you weren’t around back then that company paid bloggers to write about its company. Some bloggers got paid almost $1000 to write about them. Seemed sleazy, right? But no one complains about bloggers taking a similar deal from advertising companies like Google and Chitika.

http://scobleizer.wordpress.com/2005/11/12/one-place-blogosphere-is-hypocritical-advertising/

Randy: I think most will agree there's a big difference between Marquis and AdSense (and AdSense like advertisers). Marquis pays bloggers to write content. AdSense pays bloggers to place ads on their blogs (and other sites) around their content. I don't write AdSense ads and they are clearly marked as ads. Marquis bloggers were writing the ads. Marquis comprimised the integrity of the blogger, AdSense and Chitika and Adbrite don't.

Chitika Referral Juice

Yesterday, Darren Rowse noticed that Robert Scoble used a referral ID (accidently) for Chitika eMiniMalls in his blog post. With all the referral programs kicking in recently, it's no wonder that Google is now ranking some affiliate referrals higher than the actually homepages. I'm sure the benefactor is gonna make some cool coin for his good SEO practices. Good for him!

Consolidated Google accounts causes problems

JenSense: After the AdSense updates last week, some publishers experienced problems logging into their AdSense accounts while their AdWords account logins were working correctly. But as of this afternoon, the bug has been fixed, and all publishers should be able to login.

http://www.jensense.com/archives/2005/11/consolidated_go_1.html

Wish List for AdSense Referrals

Allow Text Links

Allow Customization of Ad Colors

Allowing Users to Encourage Clicks

Randy: I wanted to add my own. How about Allowing Canadians to participate in the Firefox referral program.

Google Publication Ads

Chris Tilk: I just wrote a post about Google supposedly moving into placing ads in newspapers, with a Chicago paper being used as the first publication. Well here is the link to sign up for Google Publication Ads.

https://adwords.google.com/publicationads/login

Randy: Is Google the ultimate media buyer? Upto now, Google has done two things better than anybody else before. The first was Web search. The second is definately media buying.

Getting new Domains Indexed

I recently purchased a new domain r-mail.org, to run the R-mail application. The biggest problem with new domains is getting into the Google index. Enter Google Sitemaps. I created a site index and two sitemaps for the new domain. Eh List is still reporting zero pages indexed. I'll report back in the next few days, if there are any changes. Of course, there's still the Google sandbox effect, which limits the rank of new domains in the Google index.

Inside Google has written two articles describing a patent discovered by PaidContent that describes a service called Google Automat, which presumably is related to Google Base. Screen shots from the patent can be found at Inside Google. Basically, you can create a classified ads inside Google and then purchase placement (AdWords) on the Google SERPs and presumably their content network (AdSense).

By adding ch_sid = 'XXXX'; to the code you will be able to track performance by channel. Replace XXXX with a meaningful channel name of your choice. You get to define your own meaningful channel names. Reporting by SID will be available shortly

AdBrite Network Down

The AdBrite network seems to be down. This was causing many of my Webpages to load very slowly (30+ seconds). I've disabled AdBrite temporarily until the situation is fixed. I noticed that other Websites using AdBrite were also experience slow load times. I think I'm gonna wrap my AdBrite ads in an <IFRAME> to prevent this problem from occuring in the future.

FIX: I've created a fix for the AdBrite network instability. Basically, I wrap the AdBrite ad in an <IFRAME>.

<div style="margin-top:1em;" id="adbrite">
<iframe src="alternate2.html" width="120" height="640" frameborder="0" scrolling="no">
</iframe></div>

Then, I put the AdBrite code in the alternate2.html page body.

Update: The AdBrite network seems to have completely collapsed now. If you are using AdBrite, then try the code I provided in the FIX. I noticed that all of the AdBrite publishers are no longer showing any ads. I checked using Terminal Services from several networks and they are all not showing AdBrite ads and causing Websites to hang.

Update: I sent an email to AdBrite when this happened. They've never answered the email. [Update: they replied and confirmed they are experiencing problems]

AdSense vs. AdGenta

Mark Evans: AdGenta [cut] is total mystery because there's no financial information available. It's like taking a leap of faith that there will be a financial reward down the road, which is a strange situation for a new service trying to solicit bloggers and advertisers.

http://evans.blogware.com/blog/_archives/2005/11/5/1348116.html

Randy: That's pretty weird. AdGenta reports clicks and impressions, but not earnings. Isn't that the whole point? I couldn't care less about clicks and impressions.

Google Adsense blog: If you are a U.S. publisher, for Firefox with Google Toolbar referrals we will pay up to $1 per referral the first time a user installs Firefox. (We hope to make this available soon to international publishers.)

A few months ago an end-user community of TargetFirst publishers started a forum Website to help each other monetize the TargetFirst network. The forum now actively discourage membership.

Attention: TargetFirst have failed to pay most of their publishers within the last few months. Almost all the members here have posted about never recieving payment for months on end. TargetFirst have failed to pay despite multiple emails from me and other members. We highly suggest you do not sign up as a TargetFirst publisher.

Patience is Key with AdSense

I find patience is likely the most important part of the AdSense equation. Too many AdSense publishers can't figure out why changes made yesterday are not making them richer today. Every once in a while, one of my channels that I haven't changed much in many days will begin rewarding me with an eCPM >$10. I'll remember making a change a week or two ago and although I'll never know for certain, I can look back and see that slow rise from $1 to $10 eCPM from the time the change was made. Patience is key!

Don't Bury Ads in your Left Sidebar

Adsense User: I put a text/image ad on in the top center of my Webpage. There is suppose to be a 468x60 banner or text there. However all it shows is blank space, NO TEXT OR BANNERS. How could this be? I put as much text and links as possible to get the ads to work. I put lots of keywords and a long description in a META tag, but that didn't do anything.

Randy: AdSense populates your ads in the order they appear in the HTML, not the order on the Web form. You have an ad unit in the left side bar that is higher in the HTML then the ad at the top of your screen. AdSense populates the left sidebar ad unit first, then the top ad unit. If it cannot find more than five ads, then it won't populate the ad at the top and it will be left blank. Note also that the best paying ads also go in the first ad unit. That means your best ads are buried down the left sidebar and the ads near the top, which have higher CTR, are getting less valuable ads. I suspect by deleting the ad unit in your left sidebar, your eCPM will increase.

Amazon Associates Scam

I tried to use my Amazon Associates claim code today to buy free stuff at Amazon.com. I first tried Amazon.ca, as I live in Canada. But it was not accepting the Amazon Associates claim codes. I then switched over to Amazon.com and was able to enter the claim code, except that now it was adding $9.xx in shipping charges, instead of the free shipping I would have had from Amazon.ca. Since, I only had $40 in Amazon Associates rewards, that would mean that another 25% of my reward is about to go down the drain. Can you say scam?

Update: I got a reply from Amazon and they basically didn't even try to address my problem and gave me some dumb answer about how my claim code has already been assigned. And then when I tried to respond, the email bounced "We're sorry. You've written to an address that cannot accept incoming e-mail." Based on the absolute crapulent service they've given me over the last year, I'm pretty comfortable with my recommendation to short their stock.

HalloweenSense

JenSense: If you were looking closely, you might have spotted some specially themed AdSense ad units for Hallowe'en today.

http://www.jensense.com/archives/2005/10/halloween_theme.html

Randy: I resized them, so they wouldn't be confused with my regular AdSense (remember those AdSense policies). Click here to see the full-size view at JenSense.

Thanks Chitika!

The preliminary results show my Website made 19% of its revenues from Chitika eMinimalls. This is fantastic! I didn't start using eMinimalls till the 12th of the month and from that day forward it made up 28% of my revenues (as much as 42% in one day). The best part is that eMinimalls is that it's not canabalizing my other revenues. It you subtract my Chitika revenues, then I still earned more than the previous month. This is mostly because you can disable the contextual targeting in eMinimalls and run the ads on the same page as AdSense (effectively doubling you ads). Last month, AdSense accounted for more nearly 100% of my Website's revenues. It's great to have diversity.
